After a session, Metanoa can take the notes you've written and restructure them into a professional clinical format for you. This saves you time and keeps your documentation consistent across your team.
What Formats Can AI Generate?
There are two formats to choose from depending on what you need.
SOAP Notes follow the standard clinical documentation format, covering Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan sections. This is the format most therapists use for session-by-session clinical records.
Progress Reports are written in a more narrative style, suitable for sharing updates with parents, caregivers, or other stakeholders who may not be familiar with clinical formats.
Both use your session notes as the source, so the content comes from what you've already written. The AI restructures and refines it, it doesn't invent anything.
How Do I Generate a Session Note?
You'll find the Report Generator in the Session Notes field when you add or edit a session. Look for the dropdown button next to the Session Notes heading.
Let's Generate a Session Note
- Open a session by adding a new one from the calendar or editing an existing one
- Write your session notes in the Session Notes field, covering what happened during the session
- Click the Report Generator dropdown next to the Session Notes heading
- Select the format you want, either SOAP Notes or Progress Report
- Click Generate and the AI will process your notes
- Review the output and edit anything that needs adjusting before saving
And you're all set! The generated content replaces what was in the Session Notes field, so make sure you're happy with your original notes before generating if you want to keep them.
Getting Better Results
The AI works from what you write, so more detail in your notes leads to better output. You don't need to write in any particular format beforehand, just capture what happened clearly and the AI will handle the structure.
A few rough sentences are enough to get started. Full paragraphs give it more to work with and tend to produce more accurate and useful output.
Common Questions
Can I edit the generated note after it's created?
Yes, and you should. The generated output goes straight into the Session Notes editor where you can change, add, or remove anything. Treat it as a strong first draft.
What happens to my original notes when I generate?
The generated content replaces what was in the field, so if you want to keep your original notes separately, copy them before clicking Generate.
Can I generate both formats for the same session?
You can generate one format, review it, and then generate again with the other format selected. The second generation will replace the first, so save or copy the first one if you want both.
The Generate button isn't showing up. What's wrong?
The Session Notes field needs to have some content before the button becomes active. If you've typed notes and still don't see the option, check with your Admin as AI access may need to be configured for your organization.
